Thailand, officially the Kingdom of Thailand, is a country in Southeast Asia. Its capital and largest city, Bangkok, is known for its rich culture, historic temples, vibrant nightlife, and modern city life. Thailand is one of the world’s most popular travel destinations, attracting visitors with its tropical beaches, delicious food, fascinating culture, and warm hospitality.

Bangkok, known locally as Krung Thep, became the capital in 1782 when King Rama I moved the royal court to the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River. Today, Bangkok is Thailand’s cultural and commercial center and a gateway to destinations throughout the country.

Thailand is often called the “Land of Smiles,” a nickname associated with the country’s famous hospitality and welcoming people. Thailand is also unique in Southeast Asia for never having been formally colonized by a European power. The country’s name is commonly understood as meaning “Land of the Free.”

Buddhism and Thai Culture

Buddhism plays an important role in Thai culture and everyday life. More than 90% of Thailand’s population is estimated to be Buddhist, and temples, locally known as wats, can be found throughout the country.

Some of Thailand’s most famous temples include Wat Phra Kaew at the Grand Palace in Bangkok and Wat Pho, home to its impressive 46-meter-long Reclining Buddha covered in gold leaf. Buddhist traditions also influence Thai festivals, art, customs, and daily life.
